5 Minute Shoot: Daylight and Flash

Felt a bit technically behind in Gash's shoot so I read Julian's post (thanks Julian, that post was so helpful) and did it for myself. It took me less than 5 minutes to get it 'right', I actually understand what I am doing now (lol!) and I could do it again in no time! And no doubt I will use this technique in my portfolio.

Technical Details:
1. I set my camera on 50 ISO
2. I set my shutter on 90th (I will set it on 200 next time so I get wider apertures than 22)
3. I took a reading of the ambient light (background) and it was f/11
4. So I set my camera to f/22, underexposing the daylight by 2 stops. I took a quick shot, yes, underexposed.
5. I adjusted the power setting and distance of the light to the model until I got a reading of f/22.

  1. Hi Tina, another way to do this which doesn't affect the flash exposure or the depth of field is to: (and I think this is the way I described on the blog)

    1. Take an incident reading to determine the daylight exposure, ideally at a low ISO like you did. Let's say the DAYLIGHT reading if 60 @ f16. Set the SHUTTER SPEED at 2 settings faster, in this case 250 sec. This will underexpose the daylight by two stops. You could also do it for 1 stop under.

    2. Adjust the output of the flash until you get a flash reading of your previously calculated f-stop, in this case f16.

Result: Daylight is underexposed by a factor of 4 (2 shutter speeds faster) and subject is correctly exposed with flash because of the f-number chosen.

Your version obviously worked for the same reasons of course. The result was identical. My version here depends upon the camera having a fairly fast flash sync speed so that when you go higher it still syncs.

  2. I was gonna add that your shots looked a little dark, could be just Blogger or just that you two are quite tanned. J

  3. Yep i understand all that yay! And i will try underexposing the daylight with shutter speed next time. True about depth of field, didn't really mind in this shot since it was a wide dof. And yes the shot did come out darker on blogger (not this dark in LR). And my parents are tanned too (thats not me in the shot lol!)

    Thanks for ur feedback
